Sandwich Squad

This is our third year of providing delicious meals to our neighbors through Sandwich Squad on Saturdays at Marion Square Park (Commercial side).

We set up in the park just prior to 2pm - servers are hopefully there to help and then the first sandwich maker arrives with their deliciousness for our neighbors at 2pm. The dishes arrive every 15 minutes after that, with the last one at 3:45pm. Sometimes Sandwich Squad may end early if we don’t have enough folks to sign up to bring delicious dishes.

We offer sandwiches and hearty salads that volunteers sign up to provide. A food handler’s card is required to make food for Sandwich Squad and also to volunteer to serve but if you don’t have a food handler’s card, you can still sign up for a server position and you can help with the table that offers period packs, hot weather aid and harm reduction.

Lex and Jordan are the point people for this Sandwich Squad at Marion Square Park on Saturday.

Radical Free Market

In 2020, we started the Radical Free Market which is a revolutionary market where all items are free and gifted. Community members bring their gently used goodies to gift away to one another and whatever is not taken is then removed by the community member that brought it. We have a food offering at the Radical Free Market and the laughter and good times are abundant on this joyous gathering of community. The Radical Free Market takes place once a month in the spring and summer months when we have someone volunteer to be the point person at the market.

The first market of the season is Sunday, May 28th from 12pm-3pm at the pavilion at River Road City Park 3045 River Road North. There is parking, it’s close (across the fred meyer parking lot) to a bus line, bathrooms, wheelchair accessible, playground. You’re welcome to pull in close to the pavilion to unload.

This is not a drop site.

We still need some folks to sign up to help us provide a free meal at the Radical Free Market. We are asking folks to plan on feeding 15 with their dish, and if you’re cooking, we ask that you have a current food handler’s card. Prepaying for pizza or any other delivery of food is welcome, usually giving them the park address works for delivery. radical free market meal link

October Share Fair

updated 10/09/2022

The October Share Fair is Saturday, October 22nd from 11am-3pm at Marion Square Park.

As the weather shifts to cooler weather, we would like to offer our neighbors intentional aid for autumn and winter by having a free store at the Share Fair. Some of the things we would like to collect for the free store are jackets, shoes, boots, small propane tanks, beanies, sleeping bags, towels, blankets, tents, tarps, backpacks, and thermal gear.

These items can be collected from your family and friends and you can also reach out to your buy-nothing groups on Facebook to collect items. Maybe even look for things as garage sale season comes to an end.

All these items can be dropped off at the new warehouse during open hours on Sundays from 11am-3pm. Please send us an email at freefridgesalem@gmail.com for the address.

If have a skill to offer at the Share Fair, then please send us an email at freefridgesalem@gmail.com

And, if you’d like to make a donation for us to make intentional purchases for our neighbors, please use our new venmo: @freefridgesalemproject

The October Share Fair is for everyone because we are all neighbors.

Food Drive

We are currently having problems accessing funds in our new venmo and so we are unable to do our weekly shopping. As many of you know, we spend an average of $1000 per week to stock the warehouse so that we can have folks come and shop for their fridges and pantries and also so that we provide bin service twice a week.

We are asking our community and your reach of friends and family to help us by bringing some non expired shelf stable foods this Sunday during open warehouse hours from 11am-3pm.

The things that we are most looking for are pop tops of:

canned proteins like chili, hearty soups, canned meats (spam, potted meat, chicken), tuna, refried beans, vegetables, fruits.

Shelf stable foods like items like stuffing, mac n cheese, mashed potatoes, pastaroni, ricearoni, peanut butter, jelly

Snacks like individual chips, cookies, fruit snacks, trail mix, rice krispy treats, cereal, granola bars, jerky, small cereal boxes

Water and beverages like soda, electrolytes, shelf stable milk.

Email us at freefridgesalem@gmail.com for the address to the new warehouse.

If you can't make it by the warehouse, you can also use our drop sites at Cooke's Stationery (370 State St), Across the Street Vintage (1109 Edgewater St NW) and Summerland Studios (2111 Hyacinth St NE)

Thanks for taking care of one another.

Sandwich Squad Salem

Sandwich Squad Salem has started for the warmer months and we are offering sandwiches without strings, hygiene kits, period packs, spring/summer weather goodies and harm reduction at Marion Square Park.

Our neighbors are no longer camping in the park but they’re camping around the area and we know from past experience that when we show up with delicious food, our neighbors come to eat. We are still looking for sandwich makers and sandwich servers (head to our ‘interested?’ page for descriptions)

A current food handler’s card is needed for both spots. You can sign up for a spot at the link. sandwich squad sign up link

Radical Free Market

The Radical Free Market is Sunday, September 18th from noon - 4pm at River Road Community Park!

Join us for the two year anniversary of this radical project!

River Road Park is a great park for the market. We have the first covered area reserved and are planning to barbeque. If you would like to bring a dish, please do! There is a playground, a basketball court, a soccer field and a big parking lot and lots of space to spread out for the market.

The Radical Free Market is a market where everything including the meal is free! You bring your gently used, clean items and offer them to our neighbors for free. Whatever isn’t gifted to a neighbor is taken back by you. The Radical Free Market is not a drop site.

Please share the entire post when sharing because we want to make sure that everyone knows the guidelines for the market.

There is a playground, a small parking lot and lots of space to spread out for the market. When setting up your space at the market, please try and stay by a walkway instead of in the middle of a grassy space, so that folks with wheelchairs and such can easily view your goodies too.

Radical Free Market

The Radical Free Market is turning one! We have been participating in the revolutionary Radical Free Market for one year and we are so happy at the ways that this community has embraced and celebrated the beautiful concept; there is enough if we share.

The Radical Free Market will be at Wallace Marine Park, in the first parking lot. We will set up in one corner of the parking lot (bring tables or blankets) and park and then have everyone park in the other corner of the lot.

The Radical Free Market is an outdoor market where everything is free! Folks bring their clean and gently used items to the market, set them up and the items are gifted to anyone that can use them. When the market is over, you take your goodies back with you that weren't gifted to someone in the community.

The Radical Free Market is not a drop site.

We also like to offer a meal at the Radical Free Market and if you're interested in cooking something for the market, please let us know. A current food handler's card is needed and if folks want to do a potluck type food situation this time, we are all for it!

Even if you don't have anything to give away at the Radical Free Market, you are still invited to come and hang out and be in community.

Radical Free Market

The Radical Free Market is back for the month of June and we are celebrating PRIDE! Please come and bring all your fabulousness to the market! We are going to have bubbles, community art projects, live music, performers and the revolutionary open mic will be returning. Pick up zines and other propaganda!

The Radical Free Market is a revolutionary act in which everything that is at the market is offered for free. Folks bring their new or kindly used items to the market, they set them up and whatever is not gifted away to someone in the community, it’s packed back up and the person takes it with them.

The Radical Free Market is not a drop site.

We are trying a new park this time and we are venturing to the westside! The Radical Free Market will be Sunday, June 26th from 12pm- 4pm. There are bathrooms and a splash pad at this park!
