Big Changes at Free Fridge Salem
Beginning in February, Free Fridge Salem is making some changes.
For months now, we have had one major financial supporter that has supplied us with $4k a month which has solely financed our weekly grocery order. We have used additional funds donated by other community members and from fundraising to sustain Soup Squad and have given funds to some local mutual aid needs.
We can no longer rely on one person to financially sustain us and so we are eliminating bin service after this week. This means that we will no longer be providing twice a week support to our pantries and fridges. We will also no longer need volunteers twice a week to build and deliver bins.
In the beginning of Free Fridge Salem we tried to have open warehouse hours where we wanted folks to come and shop and that's what we are going to offer as support to the pantries and fridges. You're welcome to come and shop yourself and you're welcome to come and shop if you have a pantry and fridge to support.
The warehouse will be open on Sundays from 11am-3pm and on Wednesdays from 5:30pm-7pm - new volunteer opportunity listed on our sign up.
With the warehouse being open two days a week for folks to come and shop, we are asking folks to bring shelf stable donations to the warehouse during open hours or to provide direct aid and take them right to the pantries and fridges.
Our pantries and fridges will really need community support to keep going.
The 3rd Free Fridge Salem Silent Auction is still taking place on March 4th-5th. We are currently looking for donations to offer to the community to bid on. We are going to use funds raised during this auction to purchase shelf stable foods for the warehouse and to continue our offer of care to our neighbors with Soup Squad.
If you have any questions or if you would like to offer a donation for the auction, please send us an email at freefridgesalem@gmail.com
Thanks for taking care of one another.
